“The two names fit very well: LAIKA and Sputnik. That Sputnik sent two Russians into space fascinated me. So Spunik is associated with the new and avant garde, with innovation and fascination. I am from Russia and this background is important to me. Laika, however, remains independent of the Sputnik Cinema. It could move easily into other premises”.
Laika Welcome is a new event series in Berlin which combines new audio and visual art together in one evening. Featuring several formats, including performance, screenings and discussion, the project encounters the inexact problem of how to find an accommodating setting. This kind of multiplicity attracts an audience with differing expectations, who are not always satisfied by what they see.
